The God of Details (Exodus 25: 9) – Your Daily Bible Verse – September 29

BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY: You have to do it according to everything I show you – the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings. – Exodus 25: 9

The God of Details
By Katie Westenberg

Opening the book of Exodus feels like going back in time to me. So many of the dramatic stories from this book were imprinted in my mind through felt Sunday school boards. They got a little euphoric for me.

Moses in his humble basket of reeds collected by the princess, this burning bush, the savage plagues and the spectacular escape of the Israelite – it is easy to read the first half of Exodus like a storybook.

And then comes the second half – the covenants and the law, the rules and the instructions. It seems so archaic. Reading becomes expensive and I am tempted to fly over. What are we to do with all of this? Is it still important?

The chapters are rich in history and cultural significance, which is certainly worth exploring on its own, but recently reading Exodus I was impressed with something simpler – the details.

“Further, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of twisted linen and of blue, purple, and scarlet thread; with artistic designs of cherubs you will weave them. Exodus 26: 1

When God relayed his vision of the tabernacle, it did not come in vague and half-baked ideas. It was precise and incredibly detailed. The buckles on the curtains, the clasps on the buckles, the color of the thread, the lengths and widths – it’s all there.

I’ve always loved the way God gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the ark, but those details in Exodus take the technical details to a whole new level. And they show us an entirely different side of God.

Throughout our lives we are faced with daily challenges. We are faced with little bumps in the roads, simple challenges that we pray to and through which we reflect. And sometimes we face the big guys. The really tough ones. Sometimes we take a step back and honestly ask how is this possible, God? It is new territory that we have never traveled before. Our resources are limited. On paper, that’s not even possible.

In Exodus, in the midst of these precise instructions and patterns, we meet the God of details. The God who takes Israel’s hand and says, “Here, this is exactly how I want you to do it. This thread, these many loops, these bronze clasps.

All of a sudden, the last half of Exodus takes on a whole new meaning to me. Yes, it is a rich story. Yes, we learn about the feasts and the Sabbath law, but we also meet the God Who cares about the details. We meet the God who knows and sees, who gently leads those who want to meet and know Him and are not always sure what it should be like experienced. He takes their willing hands and guides them in their growth.

This God, I AM, never changes. He’s still the God of details, taking his people by the hand today. Which gift.
