According to DailyMail, in a 2016 incident, Papini disappeared from Redding, California while jogging. The mother-of-two returned weeks later from hundreds of miles away “dazed, beaten and bruised” according to reports, and said she had been kidnapped for 22 days by two Latina women.

According to Mangas, “The sheriff asked me, because I’m a deacon in my church, asked me about a certain Bible verse.” Further, he added, “And so I told him it’s Exodus 21:16, and he says something like ‘if someone has kidnapped someone, they must be put to death. “It was inked on Sherri’s shoulder.

However, when Papini returned, she told a made-up story of how she disappeared. The 39-year-old has managed to convince people and authorities of her story. However, at a later stage of the investigation, it was discovered that she was faking her own kidnapping. Papini pleaded guilty to faking his own kidnapping and lying to the FBI and now faces jail. She will be sentenced on September 19.
The documentary series airs September 18 at 10 p.m. ET on HLN.

Keith, her husband, reported her missing in November 2016. That was when she failed to pick up their children from school. Meanwhile, her cell phone and headphones were found on the running track she was using. In further investigation, it was discovered that Papini staged the drama to get the attention of her ex-lover, James Reyes, and stayed with him for 22 days at his Southern California apartment.

Reyes revealed that Papini managed to convince him to pick her up after telling him that her husband Keith was “mistreating” her. Reyes speculated that this could eventually rekindle their romance after the duo stayed together. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old took over his room as he slept on the couch. She locked herself in the room, starved herself and cut her hair, then started inflicting injuries on herself.

The mother-of-two was arrested in March for staging her own kidnapping and deceiving the world. In a statement released earlier this year, Papini said: “I am deeply ashamed of myself for my behavior and I am truly sorry for the pain I have caused my family, my friends, all the good people who have needlessly suffered because of my story, and those who have worked so hard to try to help me.
“I will work the rest of my life to fix what I have done.”
