Response of Bishop Elpidophoros on the fire of the Greek hospital in Balıklı
Today, our Church is shaken by a disaster: a devastating fire that caused major structural damage to the Balıklı Greek Hospital in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul. The hospital is a historic building and a vital institution that today cares for our elderly sisters and brothers residing in the city.
We are grateful to our merciful God that no casualties have been reported. We are grateful to the firefighters who put out the flames, to hospital staff and to those who rushed to the scene across the city to get patients to safety.
I will visit the hospital as soon as I arrive in Istanbul for the third centenary pilgrimage, which begins on Monday. In the meantime, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is preparing to respond to this tragedy. As His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew noted, “Human life matters. Buildings, facilities, material assets can be restored”, and our Omogeneia will contribute in every possible way to alleviate the material damage suffered so that the Greek Balıklı Hospital can continue its mission of caring for the elderly and infirm.
The Philoptochos Society responds to the statement of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros on the fire at the Greek hospital in Balıklı
National Philoptochos President Arlene Siavelis Kehl said, “National Philoptochos is saddened to hear news today of the devastating fire in Balukli, a patriarchal ministry we have supported for decades. It is especially poignant. for us since the Philoptochos visited Balukli during each of our pilgrimages.
“Our love for the institution runs deep and we are ready to assist His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros in any way we can to repair the damage that has occurred. We are grateful to Our Lord that all have been evacuated safely and that there were no injuries.”
