Local couple lead burgeoning Bible study group | Local News

For Stewart and Tammy Cook, this ministry is more than a good program to help their neighbors better understand the Bible; it’s an extension of how God has changed their lives since they started the “Reading God’s Word with Purpose” program almost six years ago.

“I was broken then,” Stewart told Bridge42 Church during a Sunday morning sermon in 2018. “I was parched and angry. I was as broken as you could be for a long time.

For more than a decade, the cooks had been active members in a medium-sized Hickory church. Stewart was a deacon and Tammy was the church pianist.

“We were really getting by,” Tammy said. “We weren’t in a relationship with Christ as we should be.”

The cooks said they spend all their spiritual energy in church service rather than seeking spiritual renewal. In 2015, years of what they call “surface Christianity” began to take their toll on them. According to Stewart, it was as if her life, her marriage, her family and her faith were on cruise control.

“From the outside, if you had known us back then, you would have thought we were on a roll,” Tammy said. “We had good jobs; we were really involved in the church and we were busy, but rather than having Christ first in our lives, we integrated him wherever we could.
