How to Succeed in Life (Joshua 1:8)
By Lynette Kittle
Today’s Bible Verse: “Always keep this Book of the Law on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you take care to do all that is written therein. Then you will be prosperous and successful” – Joshua 1:8
Countless people are searching for the secrets of how to prosper in this life. In response to this research, thousands of books, articles, podcasts and more are available telling people how to succeed.
Yet God has described in His Word everything we need to know to be successful in this life and the life to come.
Yet few Christians read their Bibles on their own and don’t take the time to study God’s word. Instead, busy schedules have become more important, pushing the word of God into the background behind work, family, and even church life as a priority.
Because believers do not feed on the word of God by themselves, they do not grow because “Whoever lives on milk, being yet a child, does not know the teaching of righteousness (Hebrews 5:13) .
The Holy Spirit will teach us
Additionally, Christians often believe that they are insufficient or knowledgeable enough to read and study their Bibles on their own, not understanding how God has given us the best teacher we could have to help us understand.
“But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and bring to your mind all that I have told you” (John 14:26).
By not realizing how alive and active the Word of God is, many miss the fact that the Holy Spirit is personally revealing and teaching them His truth.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates to divide soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitude of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
The Word of God will lead us into truth
Because the lives of many believers are so full, they look for resources where they don’t have to dig and study for themselves, looking for outlets where the Word can be spoon-fed to them and someone another tells them what the Word of God says. .
While sitting under great biblical teaching can bring great understanding, sitting under those who stray from God’s truth can have devastating effects.
How many Christians have sat unknowingly under false teaching not knowing that they were being misled, because they were unable to recognize error in biblical teaching, unequipped to discern the truth?
Unfortunately, many Christians get their Bible training second hand instead of reading it for themselves, letting others interpret it for them, telling them what it means and how to apply it to their lives.
Handle the Word of God Properly
Additionally, many believers rely on their own understanding rather than what the Word of God teaches, thinking they know what it is saying but not really knowing it.
Yet, God calls us to “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
It is vital for us to know the word of God for ourselves because his words are able to go deep within us and transform us. “But solid food is for the mature man, who by constant use has trained himself to know right from wrong” (Hebrews 5:14).
