His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America
Salute to the Saint Michael’s Home Nameday Gala
The Metropolitan Club

November 14, 2021
Your Grace Monseigneur Andonios de Phasiane and dear Reverend Fathers,
Chairman of the Board Mihaltses and Trustees of Saint Michael’s Home,
Gala President, Efthalia Katos,
Esteemed Honoree, Dr. George Yancopoulos,
I am thrilled that for the third time in as many weeks, we are coming together as a community to honor Dr. George Yancopoulos, Co-Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
Tonight’s occasion is the Annual Saint Michael’s Home Nameday Gala, which benefits this sixty-two-year-old treasured institution of our Holy Archdiocese, serving our revered and respected elders in their final years. Sharing the name of the holy and visionary Archbishop Michael of blessed memory, the Maison Saint Michel celebrates the Synaxis of Heavenly Powers, led by the Archangel Michael, whose name means “Who is like God?”
What a wonderful invocation of the wonders of our Creator tonight, even as we celebrate and praise a person who is dedicated to discovering the therapeutics that abound in the created world.
As you all know, Dr Yancopoulos received the Athenagoras Human Rights Prize from His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew just over two weeks ago. And just two days ago, the Philoptochos of our Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity honored him at their annual Chrysanthemum Ball.
But tonight, the coda to the praise of our laureate by his own community returns to St. Michael’s Home, along with the Archangel Michael Award. And I believe this is most appropriate of all, because Dr. Yancopoulos’ beneficiaries have been the elderly, those most vulnerable to the adverse effects of the pandemic.
We are, indeed, very grateful for his contribution to the health and well-being of our fellow human beings, which is at the heart of the mission of Saint Michael’s Home.
This institution does more than just repay those who came before us, with the care and comfort that every senior deserves. This institution also pays for it – showing future generations how to care and how to show God’s love for all.
All of you who are gathered here tonight are part of both sides of this equation. Your generosity tonight – and throughout the year – offers a brighter future to those who left us with a glorious past.
And so, may the Lord always grant that we may keep and prosper the Maison Saint Michel, for the good of our precious elders, and for the glory of His Holy Name. Thank you!
