David Beckham has been told he’s not in England’s all-time XI as he’s not a ‘world-class’ player.
Beckham was capped 115 times for England, scoring 17 goals and registering 42 assists during an international career that spanned from 1996 to 2009.
But surprisingly, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy doesn’t place so much importance on ‘Golden Balls’.
Although he sees Beckham as the best cruiser in the business, he believes he wouldn’t make England’s best XI – and possibly not even in Gareth Southgate’s current squad.
“David Beckham’s career in England lasted too long, I thought his career lasted too long,” Cundy said. talkSPORT on their Drivetime show with host Andy Goldstein.
“Pomp David Beckham, he’s in the team and he probably finds a way in the team, but if you play a three, where do you play Beckham?
“He is not [one of the very best]. It’s the best cruiser I’ve ever seen, but I’d rather have Sterling. Sterling has scored more goals than Beckham.
“In his pomp of course he was in every squad sheet, but I felt Beckham had been in the England squad for too long.
“Beckham was a brilliant footballer for England, he wasn’t world class, he’s not England’s best XI ever, he isn’t, not for me.”
Cundy had also, rather controversially, said England skipper Harry Kane was a better passer than Beckham after seeing him conjure up a host of delightful deliveries for Son Heung-min in a Spurs shirt.
“Kane,” Cundy replied to Goldstein when asked who was the best at handling the ball.
“I think Kane is one of the best passers, Kane’s passing is unbelievable.
“I think there’s nothing in it, Kane is so good.”
Beckham, a Ballon d’Or runner-up in 1999, won six Premier League titles and was named to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
